The Exit Toolkit · Sheet 20 of 20

Life after the sale

What's next when the business is no longer yours

Expect the identity wobble

You have probably poured years into this. A temporary loss of identity or community after completion is normal, and it passes.

Start before you finish

In the run-up to the sale, spend one day a week on hobbies, interests and reconnecting with people. Build the next life before the old one ends.

Sort the money properly

Get independent financial advice on investing the proceeds, the income you need, and retirement planning. A good IFA will build a plan with cash flow modelling.

Staying on and consultancy

If you are staying on as consultant or employee, be realistic: going from boss to employee is hard. Agree your role, hours and exit clearly in writing.

Honour your obligations

Restrictive covenants, warranty periods and earn-out terms follow you after completion. Diarise them and keep the paperwork.

Then enjoy it

Rest, travel, charity, exercise, family, or the next venture. You only sell a business once in most lifetimes; make the freedom count.

Bottom line

A meaningful transition is planned like the deal itself. The sale is not the finish line, it is the starting line for whatever comes next.
