Why owners really sell (beyond money)
Why owners decide it's time to move on
Retirement or the next chapter
After 20 or 30 years, many owners sell to regain balance, retire, or start something new. There is nothing wrong with 'I've done my bit'.
Ill health or a change in circumstances
Health, family or divorce often shape timing more than financial goals. A well-planned sale beats a forced one.
An unexpected approach
Plenty of sellers never planned to sell until a speculative letter or call arrived. A well-timed approach can be the smartest way to capture peak value.
The business needs more than you can give
Sometimes the company needs new funding, fresh energy or a bigger platform to realise its potential. A new owner may be better placed to scale it.
Plateau, overwork or boredom
When growth stalls, or you are working harder for less enjoyment, selling can be the honest answer. Just don't say that to the buyer in those words.
Co-owner or partner disputes
A sale (of the whole business, or one owner's shares) is often the cleanest way to resolve deadlock.
Bottom line
Whatever your reason, work out your objectives as owner, as manager, and for the business itself before you start. Your 'why' shapes the whole deal, and buyers will ask it as their very first question.
